This shit is real, I think we were warned in 1983 with that movie Wargames which was about a young hacker who thought he was messing about playing a new War game when in reality he was triggering a programme for actual war, the thing is these hackers are lethal and will happily ruin and destroy country's for fun.
Scary world we live in, but we should be fine I mean Russia and China are our friends now aren't they ?.

The strain without a kill switch was already out days after the original wannacry outbreak.
This new outbreak is a variant of an existing campaign, sounds like it's easily avoided if you're not an IT slackarse.

i remember getting hit by those a few times ,the one with the fake police notice that you got from porn sites, all you had to do with the was start up in safe mode, and roll back to before you got it, and it was gone, does that still work?

New variant is apparently carving through fully patched Win 7 & 10 machines, Server 2016 so far looks ok.

Using the same exploit as WannaCry was, so if you're patched against that then you're fine

Having said that, if you have a single machine on your network that doesn't have the SMB patch and gets infected, the attached worm will then fuck up other machines on your network

External Blue is a hacker tool developed by the NSA (allegedly) to get into large corporate networks illegally. They dumped it, a group of hackers got hold of it enabling them to use an exploit ( a fuck up in MS code) to get ransomware into networks, once it's in it spreads like wild fire especially as this one has a worm attached to it.

The reason the so called poorer nations are getting hit alot harder than the likes of the UK and US is they use a lot of counterfeit versions of MS products as they can't afford the real one's, they then can't patch those products becaue they can't connect to Microsoft updates meaning the ransomware gets in and spreads alot quicker
